Goals & Objectives

    • Thanks Duncan, Peter & Paul.

City of North Vancouver - Don(temporary)

  • Meeting with Staff
    • Sep-20: Easton, Rhonda & Don met with Brandon, see updates below
    • Next meeting - Early October
    • Staffed ask for our opinion on alternatives for steep downhill sections, with multiple cross roads:
      • Cyclist Take the lane {assuming 30-50km zone}
      • Bike lane next to traffic {highly visible to people in cars}
      • Separated bikelanes, at distance from traffic lanes {and parked cars away from intersections}
  • Casano-Loutet Overpass
    • Stuck waiting for MoTI permits (for over 6 months), start date on hold.
  • Midtown Connector - HUB top priority
    • Report to Council in November
    • We requested that we be able to provide comments on early concepts.
      • Central Lonsdale is a Destination, and not just a busy road to cross.
    • Need to work out how best to support staff and council on this.
    • covers from Grand Blvd to W 1st, will be done in Phases.
  • Chesterfield - HUB top priority
    • Currently planned after Midtown and Upper levels Greenway.
    • Below Keith: Protected bikelanes are being added as properties are redeveloped
      • This could take years, especially downhill. How to advance it?
    • Above Keith: Space for bikelane allocated as redeveloped, but not installed for now due to spareness.
  • Upper Levels Greenway
    • 1st Stage (2024) will focus on Highway crossing at Lonsdale
    • Holding ongoing meetings with MoTI
    • Scope has been expanded to improving HWY1 crossing, options under consideration:
      • add-on to side of existing overpass
      • road-diet to add bikelane on existing bridge
      • new crossing (perhaps at St Georges?)
  • Kings Mill Area (Spirit Trail & Harbourside Dr)
    • Construction will continue for several more years (phase 2 not started yet)
    • Utility upgrades under Harbourside will continue for a couple more months.
      • Asked Staff to improve detours and re-establish protected bikeway on Harbourside.
  • West 3rd - Forbes to Marine Drive
    • Asked if they could do a road diet and add protection to the downhill bikelane
      • Brandon said that Vehicle lanes are already at minimum widths
  • 3rd St/Cotton/Lower Level Rd
    • Extending bike lane protection from 3rd & cotton intersection up to Neptune terminal intersection.
    • Deferred until after Midtown connector project gets underway.

12 April Howe Sound Forum discussion re: a Howe Sound multi-purpose trail

  • This meeting presented Mayor Sager with an opportunity to follow up with his proposal for a MUP between Horseshoe Bay and Whistler.
  • On behalf of DWV, the mayor hosted this semi-annual forum and arranged for BC Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Lana Popham to attend.
  • The Minister presented her ideas and seeks feedback on the concept of a long-distance (100km+) multi-use trail between Vancouver and Pemberton.
  • She set a goal of compiling options and issues for discussion in July 2024.
  • The forum participants were separated into several round table groups to consider the proposal options and raise questions.
  • The Minister’s proposal was generally well received by the meeting participants, both as a low-carbon tourism initiative and for its economic benefits.
  • The possible trail routes and their likely costs and possible public and private funding sources were discussed.
  • The Mayor of Squamish informed the forum of the advanced work already in place for a trail between Pemberton and Squamish, and the ongoing planning for a link between Squamish and Lions Bay.
  • Several speakers however expressed concern about visitor growth and overuse impacts on indigenous and natural assets.
  • Here is Paul's draft report of the meeting: https://wiki.bikehub.ca/images/a/a5/2024-04-12_Howe_Sound_Forum_Draft_Report.pdf
