Election 2011: John Gilmour
1. What modes of transportation do you normally use within Metro Vancouver? Do you ever use a bike for transportation in your municipality?
I usually drive to work as my company provides me with a car at no cost. I cycle for pleasure and exercise and this has given me an idea of some of the challenges facing cyclists.
2. How would you support and encourage cycling for transportation to promote healthy and livable communities?
By encouraging the installation of bike sharrows and bike paths where possible. I would like to see bike routes clearly marked along streets where it is safer for cycling.
3. Do you think the current level of funding for cycling in your municipality is adequate?
The DNV has been providing funding for cycling projects over several years and has made progress. We need to continue to work together to look for ways to improve cycling safety for commuters, Mtn Bikers and recreational users in future.
4. What would you do to ensure a sustainable and adequate source of cycling funding during your term in office?
Work together with the CNV and the cycling community to identify ways that cycling needs can be met with appropriate funding and partnering with stakeholders such as ICBC, Translink and the Provincial government.
5. What is your level of interest in a public bike-share system integrated with the transit system?
I like the idea as it has been tried in other communities and been successful however there may be with regard to safety (helmets) and maintenance of equipment that need to be studied.
6. What role do you think the municipality has in supporting and promoting cycling education for children, cyclists and motorists?
The DNV could be helpful to promote programs organized by other groups such as Bike to Work week and provide some support when needed. Traffic related data already on hand can be used to help make appropriate decisions and help educate children, cyclists and motorists.
7. How can residents and the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition-North Shore provide useful, systematic input and feedback on cycling in the District of North Vancouver now that the District no longer participates in the Joint Bicycle Advisory Committee?
Cycling is a integral part of our DNV network of centres goals. I would consider returning to JBAC at some point in the future as long as the results are productive. I think it is important to work together with the cycling community to work on opportunities to improve the cycling network.
