I apologize for the late response. I was waiting to hear back from you and the City of North Vancouver regarding the current funding level, but I didn’t receive a response.
1. What modes of transportation do you normally use within Metro Vancouver? Do you ever use a bike for transportation in your municipality?
I don’t drive or own a car. I use pubic transportation or walk. When I moved to this location twenty-six years ago, I chose it so I could walk everywhere to do my basic shopping. I am not currently using biking as a mode of transportation. I love walking. It is something I miss unless I do it everyday.
2. How would you support and encourage cycling for transportation to promote healthy and liveable communities?
As children, how we eat and exercise has a tremendous influence on our health as adults. Today, most children are driven everywhere. I would support biking clubs for people of all ages to promote long-term health.
3. Do you think the current level of funding for cycling in your municipality is adequate?
I made a number of attempts to find out the current funding level, but no one from your office or the City of North Vancouver e-mailed or phoned back with this information.
4. What would you do to ensure a sustainable and adequate source of cycling funding during your term in office?
I apologize but I can’t answer this question without first knowing how much funding the VACC is currently receiving.
5. What is your level of interest in a public bike-share system integrated with the transit system?
Encouraging biking as a form of transportation from a young age is essential to creating long-term healthy habits. The idea of a bike-share program is excellent because it promotes healthy exercise. However, a significant financial investment must be contributed to ensure its success. Bixi Montreal, North America’s largest biking sharing system, initially spent $15 million to implement and another $23 million to expand. (Wikipedia, 2011)
6. What role do you think the municipality has in supporting and promoting cycling education for children, cyclists and motorists?
City Council needs to support cycling infrastructure for bike lanes and trails. As gas and oil prices increase, people will have to find other sources of transportation. Municipalities can take a proactive approach by establishing environmentally sustainable modes of transportation.
