Hello Heather,

Here are my responses, thanks

1. What modes of transportation do you normally use within Metro Vancouver? Do you ever use a bike for transportation in your municipality?

I usually use my smart car, but do commute by bicycle when i can. I am a bicycle paramedic with the BC Ambulance Service and worked full time as a bicycle paramedic at YVR for 7 years. I also use public transportation quite frequently. I will be participating in bike to work week this week.

2. How would you support and encourage cycling for transportation to promote healthy and livable communities?

To start with I would keep the new bicycle lane on east Keith road between Brooksbank and Sutherland instead of going back to the 2 lanes westbound up the hill. I have lobbied hard the District of North Vancouver council to keep it one lane up hill but understand they are not supporting this. A real shame.

3. Do you think the current level of funding for cycling in your municipality is adequate?

The funding level for cycling initiatives needs to be increased significantly in the City.

4. What would you do to ensure a sustainable and adequate source of cycling funding during your term in office?

I think my record of progressive cycling initiatives is a good one. The former JBAC committee was formed as a result of my notice of motion many years ago. My track record of pursuing both federal and provincial funding is significant. I feel as if I have been a great partner to groups such as yours to really make things happen. Partnerships are the key to success for sure.

5. What is your level of interest in a public bike-share system integrated with the transit system?

I would love to have a bike share system in our city and am working with Councillor Craig Keating to do just that. Integrating it with our public transit system is a must.

6. What role do you think the municipality has in supporting and promoting cycling education for children, cyclists and motorists?

6. The City needs to take a leadership role for sure. I would especially like to pursue working with younger people so that they are encouraged, not discouraged from using the bicycle as a mode of transportation, especially to school. If we can have safe, efficient and numerous bicycling paths, lanes and routes we will make significant changes to future behaviour. I want to become the most bicycle friendly city in Canada!! My work to include cycle lanes along the City's section of Marine Drive is just now being accomplished after many years of lobbying and work. The bicycle lane up the 3rd street hill was an idea I had over 12 years ago and it is only recently that City staff approved this change. What a positive change it has been. We need more!!

One last thing, thank you, VACC and the local chapter of VACC for all the great work you have done over the years. We would not have been anywhere as successful as we have been with out you!

Cheers,

Darrell Mussatto
