TriCities HUB Committee Meeting Minutes
Date/time: Tuesday Oct 7, 7:00-8:50PM.
Location: Coquitlam Public Library, 1169 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam
In Attendance: Stephen M, Claude T, David D, Simon W, George S, Jack T, Andrew H, Sean R
Guest from City of Coqutlam: Catherine Muhorak, Manager, Transportation
Minutes:
1. The meeting was primarily focussed on updates from Coquitlam re new bike infrastructure Noted that Coquitlam survey rated improvements to cycling infrastructure as lowest priority among resident for transportation improvement after automobile, transit and pedestrian facilities. Nevertheless 56.6%of respondents were in favour of improved cycling infrastructure.
Several ongoing and pending initiatives were discussed:
-Pinetree way MUP near mall, part of Skytrain development. Still looking for additional funds.
-Funds for Glen and crosstown bike route have been secured. Both are being done on a piece wise basis.
-Johnson MUP second round application submitted.
-Riverview/Lougheed: consultants are working on options. Retaining wall needs to be replaced soon. $$$$
-Barnet bike lanes: while originally intended to be a bike lane, it appears that the city is concerned about some bottlenecks and until these are fixed does not want this to be an ”official” bike route. For the moment it is considered a shoulder. Hence the lack of signage/markers etc.
-Several education initiatives with HUB/HASTE were reviewed: BTWW, Commuter challenge, bike skills workshop, middle school program, cycling rodeos.
Committee concerns noted:
-United corridor still has crucial gap between Como Creek and King Edward. City is waiting for Fraser Mills to complete this, but it may be a long way off. Committee recommended temporary route along sidewalks. This is urgent. Noted that New West has approved MUP up to the bailey bridge.
Action item: arrange assessment ride to investigate temp sidewalk route.
-Lack of way finding and named routes is a concern. As routes become continuous, we urge the city to implement.
-Queried possibility of United route behind new car dealership. Stated that CPR right of way has been moved for PMH1 and now precludes this option.
Action item: Investigate
Asked how committee can work better with city to help promote cycling:
