Hello Burnaby HUB members,

TransLink has an online survey opportunity (https://www.translink.ca/plans-and-projects/projects/rapid-transit-projects/burnaby-mountain-gondola) open until November 19 for the Burnaby Mountain Gondola.

The Burnaby Local Committee came up with a few bullet points that we hope TransLink will consider and improve the cycling experience for people who cycle and encourage new people to take up cycling. Feel free to include any of these points when you complete the survey:

  • provide secure bike parking at both gondola stations, such as Bikeep lockers, glass-enclosed bike parkades in a highly-visible location, and/or sets of bike racks within the atrium of the station that is visible to station staff and gondola riders.
  • ensure bikes are allowed on the gondolas.
  • provide bike maintenance stands in the station concourse.
  • work with the City of Burnaby to create an AAA protected bike connection along Production Way from the Gondola Station to the Burnaby Mountain Urban Trail, to coincide with the opening date of the Gondola
  • work with the City of Burnaby to create an AAA protected bike connection along Brighton Ave from the Gondola Station to the Central Valley Greenway, to coincide with the opening date of the Gondola
  • work with the City of Burnaby to extend existing protected cycle lane on Lougheed Hwy from Gaglardi Way to Production Way, to end at the Gondola Station, to coincide with the opening date of the Gondola
Bike facilities around Production Way-University Station

We've included a map on the right of existing bike facilities in the area of Production Way-University Station. As the map shows, there are currently no AAA cycling facilities (solid green lines) leading to the proposed gondola station from popular cycling routes like the Burnaby Mountain Urban Trail and the Central Valley Greenway.

Again, the survey link is on this page: https://www.translink.ca/plans-and-projects/projects/rapid-transit-projects/burnaby-mountain-gondola and open until Nov 19. It's a very short survey. Question 10 has a free text comment field where you can enter your comments regarding cycling or other suggestions.

Please note that we are not endorsing or opposing the gondola project, just using the TransLink survey to provide feedback to TransLink at a very early stage (while changes are still easy to incorporate) that IF the gondola project were to be approved and proceed, these are the cycling-related infrastructure and cycling upgrades that we'd like to see as part of the project. And also, to show TransLink that there's a need and demand for AAA cycling facilities to access key transit hubs.
