Election 2011: Mike Little
1. What modes of transportation do you normally use within Metro Vancouver? Do you ever use a bike for transportation in your municipality?
No. I bike recreationally with my kids but we tend to stay within a few kilometres of home. My oldest is starting to get interested in Mountain biking so I will probably branch out into that as well.
2. How would you support and encourage cycling for transportation to promote healthy and livable communities?
I have supported the 2006 Bicycle Master plan. Over the next few years I would like to focus on implementing the sections in the Lower Lynn/Maplewood corridor. Without this key section at the Bridgehead, many of our other projects remain disconnected.
3. Do you think the current level of funding for cycling in your municipality is adequate?
No, but I don’t see how we can dramatically increase it over the next few years. We have had some success dovetailing our master plan with regional projects to get funding in place sooner. We should continue with that while seeking other funding sources.
4. What would you do to ensure a sustainable and adequate source of cycling funding during your term in office?
‘Adequate’ is a tricky term in this instance, I support increasing the municipal support and I am willing to hear any ideas you may have on this issue, but I do not support bicycle licensing.
5. What is your level of interest in a public bike-share system integrated with the transit system?
I would be interested in a trial of such a system.
6. What role do you think the municipality has in supporting and promoting cycling education for children, cyclists and motorists?
I support the North Vancouver Safety committees Elmer program which trains young people on how to understand road signage as it pertains to cyclists.
7. How can residents and the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition-North Shore provide useful, systematic input and feedback on cycling in the District of North Vancouver now that the District no longer participates in the Joint Bicycle Advisory Committee?
The Transportation Planning Advisory Committee (TPAC) is the best avenue for liaising with planners on cycling issues, but direct communication with councillors is always an available avenue. If there is a specific project where you believe cycling concerns are not being addressed, make us aware.
