It was great to get your letter and request about biking issues.
Here are my responses.

1. What modes of transportation do you normally use within Metro Vancouver? Do you ever use a bike for transportation in your municipality?
My job with Vancouver Coastal Health requires me to travel around the health region. My husband and I car pool when possible and I enjoy riding my bicycle recreationally and when possible to work in the summer.
2. How would you support and encourage cycling for transportation to promote healthy and livable communities?
The strong medical evidence that demonstrates the important role of exercise in developing a healthy community and citizens is undeniable. I support programs and policies that will make cycling and any active lifestyle an easy and natural choice. This can be through increased cycling routes to ensure safe biking, access to secure storage for peace of mind, and shower and change facilities that enable riding as an option for many. Policies regarding land use should ensure that our communities are walkable and ride-able. An example of this is to support local business so people can live near their work.
3. Do you think the current level of funding for cycling in your municipality is adequate?
No. The projected growth on the North Shore of jobs (with the Seaspan contract) and homes will increase pressure on the infrastructure and transition the major traffic patterns from a North/South axis to an East/West one. We need to ensure roads and transportation are focused on developing sustainable transportation options (e.g. safe cycling and transit) for this large East-West traffic shift.
4. What would you do to ensure a sustainable and adequate source of cycling funding during your term in office?
I would ensure that cycling stays on top of the priority list in the transportation and land use planning decisions made by the City. By doing so we can ensure that cycling needs are always considered as a viable transportation option.
5. What is your level of interest in a public bike-share system integrated with the transit system?
I am a supporter of the principle of bike sharing systems they have been successful in Montreal, London and other high density world cities. However, I’m concerned that the geography and commuter flow patterns of the North Shore may make this a challenge for regular pedal bikes and may require using more expensive electric bikes.
6. What role do you think the municipality has in supporting and promoting cycling education for children, cyclists and motorists?
The municipality should continue to support the education of the cyclists, pedestrians and motorists stakeholders on safety, environmental and social benefits surrounding cycling. I am a big advocate of helmets and from the perspective of a health professional would like to see the bylaws enforced.
