Glad to respond. You may find our new OCP a huge step in the right direction. I advocate for a really effective East West safe bike route so that our younger people can use a bile rather than waiting a long time for a bus.
1. What modes of transportation do you normally use within Metro Vancouver? Do you ever use a bike for transportation in your municipality?
I have used public transit and private vehicles. Yes I have used my bike. However my shoulder and knee injury has kept me off it.
2. How would you support and encourage cycling for transportation to promote healthy and livable communities?
Yes. My council colleagues worked with staff and the community developing the new OCP which supports cycling.
3. Do you think the current level of funding for cycling in your municipality is adequate?
We are completing the Spirit Trail and adding bike lanes, more has to be done.
4. What would you do to ensure a sustainable and adequate source of cycling funding during your term in office?
The new OCP will roll out in the next term and a large part of the plan is cycling as an alternative to vehicles.
5. What is your level of interest in a public bike-share system integrated with the transit system?
Actually, I like the some of Bike share systems in Europe. I remember suggesting to George Puil (GVRD Chair) that if he wanted to promote transit and bike use, all private vehicles should be banned from the downtown core and “Share Bike Stations” set up throughout the downtown so that a person could use a bike and leave it at a station once the trip is complete. Needs work I know but what is the alternative? (NB: George didn’t like the idea—too much parking revenue would be lost!!!!)
6. What role do you think the municipality has in supporting and promoting cycling education for children, cyclists and motorists?
Again, we have and are doing that through our new OPC.
7. How can residents and the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition-North Shore provide useful, systematic input and feedback on cycling in the District of North Vancouver now that the District no longer participates in the Joint Bicycle Advisory Committee?
By becoming a part of the OCP “Roll Out” because cycling has been given a significant role to play in our future.
